Interviewer's note: This interview was conducted by e-mail at the request of the artists. Phyllis responded on behalf of both herself and Richard.
LE:How many pieces of art have you created in your lifetime? At what age did you start??
PN:During my lifetime so far, I would have to estimate that I have created over 300 works in all genres, but this would include writing and poetry
Richard has taken hundreds of photos(some are published), and created over 40 pottery pieces now.
We often work on multiple projects at once. Currently we have pottery in progress, photo tiles being finished, and are working on a collaboration book, among other items.
LE: Do you work on more than one piece at a time?
PN:We often work on multiple projects at once. Currently we have pottery in progress, photo tiles being finished, and are working on a collaboration book, among other items.
LE:Do you have a favorite work?
PN: Every NEW piece is a favorite for a while, but we have never parted with the Found Object piece ‘Suburbia’, and an oil painting named ‘Corn’.
My favorite poem is ‘Musings at the Meteor Crater’.
LE:Where do you find inspiration for your work?
PN:We are both strong on Nature. That is a primary source of inspiration.
LE:Do you have a favorite medium to work in? Are there other mediums you want to try?
PN:Currently, pottery! (Both of us)
Rich: Photography is always part of what he does. He has often ‘toyed’ with the idea of working in wood as another medium.
Phyllis: Writing, of course: poetry, first of all, then little essays that I do. I can’t NOT write. If I had another lifetime to try other media, I would first off like to try metal sculpture.
LE: Who are some of your favorite artists?
PN:
Phyllis: Salvador Dali, Matisse, Picasso, Pixar Studios! Kurt Vonnegut. Elizabeth Bishop...I could really go on here, you know.
Richard: Paul Klee, Salvador Dali, Rembrandt, Michelangelo.
