A Profile of Children and Families in the Program
The children in the SOAR program are in grades kindergarten through seven.
They attend Booker T. Washington School which is located in the northern area of Champaign, IL. Approximately 40 students participate in the program.
Many of the children are from families in the Shadowwood community. Shadowwood is comprised of primarily
recent Spanish-speaking immigrants. This means that most of the children are non-native English speaking. Although they may speak some English,
their skills are limited especially in reading English text. For the vast majority of these children, English is not spoken in their homes so adult
family members cannot assist with reading skills development or homework. The children's learning task when it comes to school is two fold--they are
simultaneously learning English while learning to read. As they advance in grades, they are still learning the English language and, now, also required to learn subject content.
