The Illustrations

Not everyone was satisfied with the Helen Sewell and Mildred Boyle illustrations. In 1943 after the publication of These Happy Golden Years "Urula Nordstrom at Harper began to plan for republication of the entire series in a uniform format with new illustrations. The original books were illustrated by Helen Sewell, assisted by Mildred Boyle. Nordstrom explained her desire to find a different illustrator by saying that Sewell's "style was extremely decorative and stylized, and as Mrs. Wilder wrote more books the Sewell pictures seemed to me less and less suited for these forthright realistic frontier stories" (Piehl).
